Organizations Involved

Climate change is one of the most underrated, natural disasters we have and as of right now, Washington is one, of the many places affected by climate change, and this issue is only going to get worse if we don't do something about it. People don’t know the long term effects of climate change and they don't really care about it, but organizations such as Friends of the Earth, Afri, and Oxfam, realizes that if we don't do something soon to help control the climate change, people could lose their homes and quite possibly, their lives.

Friends of the Earth

Friends of the Earth, is a non governmental organization that works in 75 different countries. Their main goal is to defend the environment and have a healthy and sustainable world. As of right now, Friends of the Earth top priority is to stop the use of fossil fuels by finding alternative ways of getting energy such as solar power. If they can find a way to stop using fossil fuels to create energy, that would be a big step in helping stop climate change not only in Washington, but in the rest of the world as well.

 Afri

Afri stands for Aid From the Republic of Ireland and was founded in 1975. This organization's mission is to promote global justice and respond to the threat of climate change. Although, Afri is mostly working on trying to prevent poverty, they do have a concern in climate change. Some studies show that climate change is one of the factors that causes poverty, so Afri believes, that if they can help stop climate change, they will also be helping in stopping poverty to.

Oxfam

Oxfam stands for Oxford Committee for Famine Relief and they were founded in 1942. Oxfam’s works with people in over 90 different countries and there vision is to have a world without poverty. There mission is to create long lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice. Similar to Afri, Oxfam is trying to pervert poverty by finding solutions to climate change. Oxfam believes that as climate change advances, it is the poorest countries that get hit the hardest and they feel it is their duty to help these poor countries avoid harm and adapt to the weather patterns.

Mission Statment and Global Citizen

My Mission

The reason I have created this blog, is to bring awareness to our rapid increase in climate change. Let's face the facts, climate change is happening now and it is happening fast, and Washington is one of the places feeling the wrath of it, as of now. If we dont find a way to help easy this natural issue, it will just keep wreaking havoc on unexpected places, which could be life threatening to some people. By doing this blog, I want to get the word out about climate change and how it should be in our top priority to do something about this problem so future generation can have a safe and environmentally friendly place to live. I also want to show in this blog, that anybody can help in stopping climate change. You could do something as simple as riding your bike instead of getting a ride in a car. All of the little contributions that we do, will eventually add up into helping stop climate change.

Global Citizen

If even half the people in the world knew what global citizen meant we could all live a peaceful and happy life; the problem is, that nobody know what it means to be a global citizen. To be a global citizen, you have to be willing help with the development of the world's communities and help protect the human rights. These are the two biggest components in deciding whether or not you are a global citizen.

It is important to be a global citizen because it keeps the world running smoothly and peacefully. Also, if you became a global citizen, you would learn that we need to keep our activities sustainable, so that the younger generations will have a safe environment to grow up in. You could be doing an act of a global citizen and not even know it. Small deeds such as putting your garbage in the right container or even giving some of your old clothes to charity play a big role in being an active global citizen.

Explantion and History

The topic that I have chosen to do is the climate change in Washington DC. Climate change is when there is a disruption in the weather patterns for long durations of time. Also, climate change is referred to a change in the average weather conditions. Everywhere in the world has experienced climate change, some places more than others, but Washington DC is one of the most affected places as of right now, and it is only going to get worse if we continue what we are doing. Climate change has been wreaking havoc to the earth since the beginning of time, but it only truly started affecting Washington DC in the early nineteen hundreds. In the beginning of the nineteen hundreds, the average temperature steadily started rising .5 degrees Celsius every decade in Washington, which meant that the sea level consistently went up as well. People in Washington just ignored the fact that the climate was getting warmer and many did see the problem with it. Until, Washington had their first of many major floods in 1980. By 1990, Washington DC had an overwhelming lead in floods throughout all of the US.
